Finding a Niche

Gina Todorovich

For a long time, I didn’t know how to pronounce the word “niche.” Okay, I’m not entirely sold that I do even now. Might be one of the words I will always pause and think about how to pronounce before saying it out loud.

Fitting that I struggled not only with saying the word but finding it in my photography. I tend to be interested in and drawn to variety and diversity—in life, not just photography. I’ve said, even in a job interview, that I would be a “professional dabbler.”

In the beginning of my photography endeavors, I much preferred landscape, architecture and abstract/art. I was actually a photography major in college until I had to take a portrait photography class. I feared it at the time. Seriously. How ridiculous is that? Shortly after deciding not to take that class I changed my major.

Over the years since then, I’ve grown so much, developed my style, gotten more comfortable. And been developing my niche along the way without me even realizing it. A friend and colleague made me see it. She was talking to me about my photography and told me I have a niche. As you can see, this was all pretty straightforward. I inquired as to what she saw that as, and she told me that it’s in my portraiture, how I capture moments that I really shouldn’t. She explained further with great eloquence I can’t seem to recall precisely. Basically, my demeanor enables me to not interfere with what is happening with the people I photograph while I am able to truly document often subtle, intimate moments.

So my niche isn’t necessarily a genre, as I often think of photography niches; however, certain realms will showcase and use my niche more—like wedding photography. I’m excited to see further growth, development and application and will share (at least some of) my journey here. Stay tuned…
